UMBC Acceptance Rate: Grades, Scores and Application Requirements
UMBC admitted about three in four Fall 2025 first-year applicants, but that university-wide result cannot score your application. Course rigor, grades, an optional test score and a complete application still supply the evidence the admissions committee reads.
The short answer
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County admitted 10,949 of 14,802 first-year applicants for Fall 2025. That produces an acceptance rate of 74.0%. UMBC enrolled 2,271 of the admitted students, a 20.7% yield. These are results for one past cohort, not your personal chance of admission.
The sections below use UMBC’s official Fall 2025 cohort for the rate and academic profile, then separate those historical figures from the university’s current Fall 2027 application rules.
UMBC’s latest acceptance rate is 74.0%
UMBC’s 2025–26 Common Data Set reports the first-year students who applied, were admitted and enrolled for Fall 2025. Dividing 10,949 admission offers by 14,802 completed applications gives 73.9697%, which rounds to 74.0%.
Fall 2025 first-year cohort
Applicants, offers and enrollment are different groups
- Applicants14,802Starting group
- Admitted10,94974.0% of applicants
- Enrolled2,27120.7% of admitted students
Acceptance rate10,949 ÷ 14,802 = 74.0%
Enrollment yield2,271 ÷ 10,949 = 20.7%
Enrollment yield starts with admitted students instead: 2,271 enrolled ÷ 10,949 admitted = 20.7%. The acceptance rate describes the institution’s decision pattern for the cohort. Yield describes how many admitted students chose UMBC. Neither rate measures the strength of one application.
The overall rate hides different residency results
UMBC also reports Fall 2025 application results by the applicant’s known physical address. The in-state, out-of-state and international groups had different rates, even though all three sit inside the university-wide total.
| Applicant group | Applied | Admitted | Calculated rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maryland residents | 11,675 | 8,879 | 76.1% |
| Out-of-state | 1,886 | 1,148 | 60.9% |
| International | 1,241 | 922 | 74.3% |
These subgroup rates are descriptive, not a personal formula. The Common Data Set does not publish an acceptance rate by major, GPA band or test score. Do not combine the residency table with another statistic and call the result your chance.
UMBC GPA, SAT and ACT profile
UMBC reports a 4.06 average high-school GPA for Fall 2025 enrolled first-year students who submitted a GPA. Because high schools calculate GPA in different ways and the reported average is above 4.0, do not treat 4.06 as a universal unweighted cutoff. UMBC’s current admissions page says it considers GPA, curriculum strength, class rank, other achievements and the essay.
| Measure | 25th percentile | Median | 75th percentile | Submitted by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SAT total | 1250 | 1320 | 1400 | 758 students (33%) |
| ACT composite | 26 | 28 | 31 | 59 students (3%) |
The score ranges describe enrolled students who submitted each test. They do not include every enrolled student, and the ACT group is especially small. UMBC’s current application page displays a 1240–1420 SAT range, while the Fall 2025 Common Data Set reports 1250–1400. Use the Common Data Set numbers to understand this named cohort and the current admissions page when making a current submission decision.
What courses and materials does UMBC require?
UMBC expects a strong college-preparatory program. Its posted minimum program of study includes the courses below. Completing the list makes an application eligible for review; it does not guarantee admission.
| Subject | Posted preparation |
|---|---|
| English | 4 years |
| Mathematics | 4 years, including Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II; take math in senior year |
| Science | 3 years |
| Social science / history | 3 years |
| Language other than English | 2 years |
A first-year application uses the Common App. UMBC also asks you to complete its Required Application Questions in myUMBC, pay the $75 application fee or use an eligible fee waiver, submit an official high-school transcript and write the application essay. SAT or ACT scores are optional for eligible U.S. high-school graduates, and up to two recommendation letters are optional. Honors College, Scholars Programs and visual or performing arts majors have additional questions, applications, auditions or portfolio requirements.
UMBC application deadlines for Fall 2027
For Fall 2027 entry, UMBC’s Early Action deadline is November 1 and its Regular Decision deadline is February 1. Early Action is nonbinding. The 2025–26 Common Data Set says UMBC does not offer Early Decision and does not publish an Early Action acceptance count.

Fall Early Action
- Apply by
- November 1, 2026
- Decision timing
- Letters begin in December
Nonbinding. This is also UMBC’s posted deadline for automatic Fall 2027 merit-scholarship consideration.
Deadlines can change. Confirm your term, program and materials on UMBC’s official application pages.
The date can affect more than the admission round. UMBC’s scholarship office says Fall 2027 first-year students should apply for admission by November 1, 2026 for automatic merit-scholarship consideration. Most separate Scholars Programs use a January 15, 2027 deadline, although individual programs can differ.
- Audit your high-school courses against UMBC’s posted preparation.
- Choose Early Action or Regular Decision and calendar the matching deadline.
- Decide whether an SAT or ACT score adds useful evidence; testing is optional for the current cycle.
- Request the official transcript and any optional recommendations before the deadline.
- Complete UMBC’s required myUMBC questions after submitting the Common App.
- Check for a separate Honors College, Scholars Program, audition or portfolio requirement.
How to use the numbers without turning them into odds
Example 1: 4.0 weighted GPA, 1340 SAT. The SAT sits within the Fall 2025 submitter range. Before focusing on the 74.0% rate, the student should confirm that the transcript includes senior-year math and the rest of UMBC’s college-preparatory pattern.
Example 2: 3.8 GPA, no test score. The student can use the current test-optional route. A rigorous schedule, steady grades, specific achievements and a clear essay become the application’s main academic and personal evidence.
Example 3: 4.2 weighted GPA, 1220 SAT, Fall 2027. The score is below the Fall 2025 SAT submitter range. The student can compare what the score adds with the rest of the record, then decide whether to withhold it. Applying by November 1 can preserve automatic merit-scholarship consideration, but it does not promise an award.
In every example, the useful decision comes from the current requirements and the evidence in the file. The university-wide rate cannot reveal an individual outcome.
