NJIT Acceptance Rate: Academic Profile and Application Requirements
NJIT admitted about two-thirds of Fall 2025 first-year applicants, but the overall rate is only a starting point. Your intended program changes the high-school courses you should complete, and Honors College or accelerated-program applicants cannot use the test-optional route.
The short answer
NJIT admitted 12,242 of 18,170 first-year applicants for Fall 2025. That produces an acceptance rate of 67.4%. The same official Common Data Set reports 1,832 enrolled students, a 15.0% yield. These are historical cohort results, not a personal admission probability.
The figures below separate applications, admission offers and enrollments, then connect NJIT’s current requirements to practical application decisions.
NJIT’s latest acceptance rate is 67.4%
NJIT’s 2025–26 Common Data Set covers students who entered in Fall 2025. It reports 18,170 first-year applicants and 12,242 admission offers. Dividing offers by applicants gives 67.3748%, which rounds to 67.4%.
Fall 2025 first-year cohort
One cohort, two useful rates
- Applicants18,170Starting group
- Admitted12,24267.4% of applicants
- Enrolled1,83215.0% of admitted students
Acceptance rate12,242 ÷ 18,170 = 67.4%
Enrollment yield1,832 ÷ 12,242 = 15.0%
The 15.0% enrollment yield uses a different denominator: 1,832 enrolled ÷ 12,242 admitted. Acceptance rate describes what happened to the applicant pool; yield describes what admitted students did next. Neither number reveals the strength of a particular application.
How the rate changed from Fall 2024
NJIT’s official institutional profiles show that applications, offers and first-year enrollment all increased from Fall 2024 to Fall 2025. The acceptance rate rose by 2.3 percentage points. That is a one-year change, not proof of a long-term trend.
| Entering class | Applicants | Admitted | Enrolled | Acceptance rate | Yield |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2024 | 17,425 | 11,338 | 1,635 | 65.1% | 14.4% |
| Fall 2025 | 18,170 | 12,242 | 1,832 | 67.4% | 15.0% |
From one class to the next, applications increased by 745, admission offers by 904 and enrollment by 197. More applications did not make the overall rate lower because offers grew faster than applications.
NJIT GPA, SAT and ACT profile
The Fall 2025 CDS reports an average high-school GPA of 3.66 among enrolled first-year students who submitted a GPA. NJIT’s current admissions page also displays a 3.65 average for its incoming class. An average describes the group; it is not a minimum. NJIT explicitly says it has no minimum GPA or test score for first-year admission.
| Measure | 25th percentile | Median | 75th percentile | Who submitted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SAT total | 1220 | 1320 | 1430 | 812 enrolled students (44.3%) |
| ACT composite | 28 | 32 | 34 | 66 enrolled students (3.6%) |
These score ranges describe enrolled students who submitted each test. They do not include every enrolled student, and the SAT and ACT groups are very different sizes. A 1320 SAT was the median among SAT submitters; it was not a guaranteed-admission line. For a broader way to set targets, compare colleges in ScoreDino’s good SAT score guide.
NJIT’s CDS labels course rigor and academic GPA as “very important.” Class rank is “important.” Scores, the application essay, recommendations, extracurricular activities, talent or ability, character, alumni relationship, geography and state residency are “considered.” The CDS says interviews are not considered.
Is NJIT test optional for 2027?
Yes, for most first-year applicants. NJIT says applicants for Spring 2027 and Fall 2027 may choose whether to submit SAT or ACT scores. Two important exceptions apply: Albert Dorman Honors College applicants and applicants to accelerated programs must submit scores.
NJIT strongly encourages scores when they support your academic record and notes that scores may be required for certain endowed scholarships. The university superscores both tests, combining your highest section results across test dates. Its school codes are 2513 for the SAT and 2580 for the ACT.
A practical choice looks like this: a student applying to a standard engineering program can consider the test-optional route; the same student applying to the Honors College cannot. A student whose superscore adds useful evidence may submit it even when testing is optional. None of those choices replaces the transcript or required high-school courses.
High-school course requirements depend on your program
NJIT requires a college-preparatory program, but the course pattern is not identical for every intended major. Select a program group below to see the posted preparation. Use the result to audit your transcript with a counselor; it does not evaluate admission chances.

- 4 years
- Mathematics
- 4 years through precalculus
- Laboratory science
- 3 years of lab science
Chemistry and physics are required. Calculus is strongly recommended.
This check summarizes NJIT’s current first-year admissions page. Confirm planned, transfer or alternative coursework directly with NJIT.
Engineering, computing and science applicants need four years of math through precalculus, with calculus strongly recommended. Chemistry and physics are required within three years of laboratory science. Engineering technology applicants also need four years of math, with precalculus strongly recommended, plus chemistry and physics.
Architecture, business, design, humanities and social science applicants need three years of math through Algebra II, with precalculus strongly recommended, and two years of laboratory science chosen from physics, chemistry or biology. All three groups need four years of English.
Application requirements and deadlines
A first-year application includes the Common App, the $75 application fee or an approved fee waiver, an official high-school transcript, and NJIT’s Common App essay. NJIT asks for one letter of recommendation. Architecture, Digital Design, Industrial Design and Interior Design applicants also submit a portfolio. Scores are optional only when the testing-policy exceptions above do not apply.
| Current posted deadline | Date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Fall Early Action I | November 15 | First nonbinding early-action deadline |
| Fall Early Action II | December 15 | Second nonbinding early-action deadline |
| Honors College | February 1 | Scores required for Honors applicants |
| Fall rolling admission | March 1 | Applications reviewed as space remains |
| Spring rolling admission | November 15 | Date on NJIT’s dedicated deadlines page |
NJIT’s official pages currently disagree on the spring date: the dedicated deadlines page lists November 15, while the incoming first-year checklist lists November 1. Because the difference could affect a real application, confirm the active deadline in Common App or with NJIT admissions before relying on either date.
- Choose your intended program and compare its course pattern with your transcript.
- Decide whether testing is optional for your route. Honors College and accelerated programs require scores.
- Ask for your recommendation early and give the writer useful academic context.
- Complete the Common App essay with specific evidence about your experiences and choices.
- If your design program needs a portfolio, follow the program instructions rather than treating it as an optional supplement.
- Check your applicant portal for received materials after submission.
Three examples of how to use these numbers
Example 1: 3.7 GPA, 1360 SAT, engineering. The score sits inside the Fall 2025 SAT middle 50%, but the student should still verify four years of math through precalculus and the required chemistry and physics. The number is supporting context, not an admission promise.
Example 2: 3.6 GPA, no score, standard business program. Test optional may be available for Spring or Fall 2027. The student can focus on transcript rigor, the essay and recommendation, while confirming the three-year math and two-year lab-science pattern.
Example 3: 3.9 GPA, 1450 SAT, Honors College. The score is above the historical 75th percentile among SAT submitters, but the Honors route still requires a complete application and test score. Neither the score nor the overall 67.4% rate guarantees an Honors decision.
In every example, the useful next step comes from the application route and the missing evidence, not from converting the university-wide rate into a personal probability.
A few more answers
Frequently asked questions
